Plant-Powered Alternatives: Vegan Ingredients Replacing Animal-Derived Ingredients

Plant-Powered Alternatives: Vegan Ingredients Replacing Animal-Derived Ingredients

In our May 10 blog, we introduced our No-No Ingredient List—a collection of animal-derived ingredients that you'll never find in any product sold by The Ethical Shopper. That's because every product we offer is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. 🐰

Then, in our June 28 blog, we took a closer look at how those ingredients are sourced from animals and why choosing vegan alternatives matters.

Today, we're highlighting the good news: innovative, plant-based alternatives can deliver the same great performance—without harming animals. Here are some of the vegan substitutes you'll find in ethical beauty, personal care, and home and pet care products:
•    Animal-Based Collagen is replaced with hydrolyzed plant proteins and algae extracts.
•    Animal-Based Elastin is replaced with plant-based peptides and proteins.
•    Animal-Based Glycerin is replaced with vegetable glycerin from plant oils.
•    Animal-Based Keratin is replaced with plant proteins or bean and quinoa peptides.
•    Animal-Based Lactic Acid is replaced with fermented plant carbohydrates.
•    Animal-Based Oleic Acid is replaced with plant oils including olive and sunflower.
•    Animal-Based Retinol is replaced with bakuchiol, rosehip oil, or plant stem cells.
•    Animal-Based Squalene is replaced with squalane from olives, sugar, and wheat germ.
•    Animal-Based Stearic Acid is replaced with steric acid from plants like coconut.
•    Beeswax is replaced with wax from candelilla plants, palm trees, berries, and rice bran.
•    Carmine is replaced with natural red pigments from beetroot, hibiscus, and lycopene.
•    Casein is replaced with hydrolyzed proteins from plants such as wheat and oats.
•    Egg Whites are replaced with mushroom extract or hydrolyzed soy and wheat proteins.
•    Guanine is replaced with mica, synthetic fluorphlogopite, or bismuth oxychloride.
