What's Really in the Ingredients on Our "No-No" List?

Did you catch our May 10 blog about our No-No Ingredient List?  It lists some of the animal-derived ingredients that will never be found in any product sold by The Ethical Shopper. Why? Because we're proudly 100% vegan and cruelty-free. ❀️🐾

But what exactly are these ingredients, and why aren't they vegan and cruelty-free? Β Below is the No-No Ingredient List from our May 10 blog and an explanation of where the ingredients come from.

  • Animal-Based Collagen – Protein taken from the bones, cartilage, tendons, and connective tissues of primarily cows, pigs, or fish.
  • Animal-Based Elastin – A protein extracted from the aorta, vertebrae, or ligaments of cows or fish.
  • Animal-Based Glycerin – A sugar alcohol made from animal fats.
  • Animal-Based Keratin – Made from ground-up animal parts such as fur, feathers, hooves, horns, and wool.
  • Animal-Based Lactic Acid – Sourced from milk mainly from cows or goats.
  • Animal-Based Oleic Acid – Derived from rendered animal fats and oils, mainly from cows and pigs.
  • Animal-Based Retinol – A form of Vitamin A obtained from animal liver or fish oils.
  • Animal-Based Squalene – Extracted from shark liver.
  • Animal-Based Stearic Acid – Produced from rendered fats of mainly cows, pigs, sheep, or goats.
  • Beeswax – Collected from honeycombs made by bees.
  • Carmine – A red dye made from crushed female cochineal insects.
  • Casein – A protein derived from cow's milk.
  • Egg Whites – Sourced from chicken eggs.
  • Guanine – A crystalline ingredient made from ground fish scales.
  • Honey – Produced by bees from plant nectar.
  • Lanolin – A wax extracted from sheep's wool after shearing.
  • Shellac – A resin secreted by lac insects.
  • Silk Powder – Made from the cocoons of silkworms.
  • Tallow – Rendered fat from cows or sheep.
