What Issues Do All Those Product Certifications Address?

At The Ethical Shopper, we’re committed to making it easier for you to shop with confidence. That’s why we created our Certification Filter—to make it easy to search for products that have the certifications you may be looking for.

As we developed this filter, we researched a wide range of trusted certifications used throughout these industries. These certifications highlight issues, from vegan ingredients and cruelty-free practices to ingredient safety, sustainability, and organic sourcing. To help you navigate these labels, here’s a quick overview of some of the certifications we researched and what issues they address:

  • PETA Global Animal Test-Free – Products and ingredients are not tested on animals.
  • PETA Global Animal Test-Free and Vegan – Products and ingredients are vegan and are not tested on animals.
  • Certified Vegan (Vegan.org) – Products and ingredients are vegan and are not tested on animals.
  • Leaping Bunny Cruelty-Free – Products and ingredients are not tested on animals.
  • The Vegan Society Vegan Trademark – Products and ingredients are vegan and are not tested on animals.
  • EVE VEGAN – Products and ingredients are vegan and are not tested on animals.
  • Certified Organic – Certifies that ingredients are produced according to established organic farming standards.
  • EWG Verified® – Products meet ingredient safety standards, avoid certain chemicals of concern, and provide full ingredient transparency on their packaging.
  • MADE SAFE® Seal – Screens ingredients to ensure they are safe for both human health and the environment.
  • USDA Certified Biobased Product – Products are made wholly or partially from renewable biological materials.
  • NEA Seal of Acceptance (National Eczema Association) – Products are suitable for many people with eczema or sensitive skin.
  • CertClean – Recognizes products formulated without certain ingredients identified as potential health concerns.

While these certifications can be valuable tools for making informed choices, each one has its own standards and areas of focus. Understanding what they mean can help you select products that align with your personal values, health priorities, and sustainability goals.  But remember, even if it doesn't have any of the certifications listed above, every product on The Ethical Shopper website is always 100% vegan and cruelty free.
