Have you heard of the USDA Certified Biobased Product program?

Last week we started introducing certifications held by one or more of the brands offered on The Ethical Shopper.  This week, we’re highlighting the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Certified Biobased Product certification.

Products carrying the USDA Certified Biobased Product certification are made wholly or significantly from renewable biological materials, such as plants and other naturally replenishable resources. These products are designed to provide sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based and synthetic products while maintaining high performance standards.

By replacing non-renewable resources with renewable ones, biobased products can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease dependence on fossil fuels, and support a more sustainable future.

The USDA Certified Biobased Product certification is administered through the USDA's BioPreferred Program. Products bearing this certification have undergone independent testing to verify their biobased content, giving consumers confidence that the claims are accurate and reliable.

  • The Label: Many certified products display a label indicating the percentage of biobased ingredients they contain, making it easy for consumers to understand their environmental impact.
  • Minimum Standards: To earn certification, products must meet USDA-established minimum biobased content requirements for their specific product category. For products that do not fall into an existing category, a minimum of 25% biobased content is required.

Today, the USDA has established biobased content standards across 143 product categories, helping consumers identify products that support renewable resource use and environmental sustainability.

At The Ethical Shopper, in addition to being vegan, cruelty-free, and holding other trusted certifications, many of Yaya Maria’s products are also certified by the USDA Certified Biobased Products program as being 100% Biobased, including their Natural Body Wash, Natural Dish Soap, Natural Face Wash, Natural Hand Wash, and Natural Dog Wash.
